KGNU hosted the Sixth Annual Grassroots Radio Conference July 13-15 at the Broker Inn in Boulder. The conference featured keynote speeches by Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now!; Juan Gonzalez, former co-host of DN and columnist for the New York Daily News; and David Barsamian of Alternative Radio.

The first Grassroots Radio Conference was held in Boulder in 1996, co-founded by KGNU and WERU (Blue Hill, Maine), as a reaction against the homogenization of commercialization of public radio. Subsequent conferences have been in held in Boulder, Bar Harbor, ME and Madison, WI.
This year's conference will focus on creating the foundation for community-based media in the 21st century. As the media is controlled by fewer and fewer megacorporations, citizen-owned and operated media outlets become more and more important for the functioning of democracy. GRC organizers hope to strengthen efforts to create, defend and preserve citizen-owned and operated media, including community radio, low power FM and independent media centers.
